abstract

geospatial information system (gis) has emerged as a very powerful tool for capturing, storing, analyzing, managing, and presenting data that is linked to location. the location information, which is usually obtained from existing maps or the global positioning systems (gps), refers to different coordinate and map projection systems. therefore, unification of the coordinate and mapping systems of the spatial information is absolutely necessary before any data processing in a gis system. in the classical approach, coordinate transformation among different map projection systems is performed via the reference geodetic ellipsoids. the transformation is possible if the reference ellipsoids and their corresponding datum definition parameters are known. in many cases, implementation of the classical approach is impossible due to lack of information. herein, we introduce an innovative approach for coordinate transformation which is completely datum-independent. it is based on the mathematical relationship between the coordinate systems. from mathematical point of view, two functions mathematically define the relationship between the horizontal coordinates in two systems. for simplicity, two polynomial functions are employed. the optimal degree of the polynomials and the unknown coefficients can be determined using the common points in two systems. in this paper, the proposed method is theoretically developed for conformal map projections. the cauchy-riemann differential equations as a necessary and sufficient conformity condition are used to derive the mapping polynomials. moreover, the validity of the new method is numerically checked on a real data set. both the classical and the new method are employed on the data set. the achieved results show very good agreement between the classical and the new approach.

Extending Adaptive Composite Map Projections with Wagner’s Transformation Method

Adaptive composite map projections transform projections as the user changes the scale of the web map. The equal-area version of the original adaptive map projection composite uses the Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection for regional maps, and three equal-area world projections, namely the Hammer, the Eckert-Greifendorff, and the quartic authalic projections. These three projections show po...

New Map Projections for Ireland

The Global Positioning System (GPS) enables precise positioning anywhere on earth with a precision of a few millimetres, if an appropriate reference frame and positioning infrastructure is in place. This framework and infrastructure in Ireland is known as IRENET95, and is a precise realisation of the European Terrestrial Reference System, ETRS89, resulting in European Terrestrial Reference Fram...

Coordinate Transformation on a Sphere Using Conformal Mapping

When setting up global ocean circulation models one faces the problem of including the Arctic Ocean where the traditional spherical coordinate system has a singularity at the pole. In addition, in regional model applications one has to deal with open boundaries where assumptions are made about the normally poorly known boundary conditions. Here an analytical reversible coordinate transformation...

Thermal Development for Ducts of Arbitrary Cross Sections by Boundary-Fitted Coordinate Transformation Method

The non-orthogonal boundary-fitted coordinate transformation method is applied to the solution of steady three-dimensional momentum and energy equations in laminar flow to obtain temperature field and Nusselt numbers in the thermal entry region of straight ducts of different cross sectional geometries. The conservation equations originally written in Cartesian coordinates are parabolized in the...

The Impact of Conformal Map Projections on Direct Georeferencing

If an aerial-triangulation (AT) is performed in the National Projection System (NPS), then the conformal map projection (which is the base for the NPS) effects the results of the AT by raising three problems: P1) the effect of the Earth curvature, P2) the different scales in plane and height, and P3) the variation of the scale in plane across large areas of interest. Problem P1 may be solved by...

Simulation of Styrene Polymerization in Arbitrary Cross-Sectional Duct Reactors by Boundary-Fitted Coordinate Transformation Method

The non-orthogonal boundary-fitted coordinate transformation method is applied to the solution of steady three-dimensional conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and speciescontinuity to obtain the laminar velocity, temperature and concentration fields for simulation of polymerization of styrene in arbitrary cross-sectional duct reactors. Variable physical properties (except for speci...
